L&D Manager at FRG Recruitment – Head of Management Training in USA.
I completed my A Level studies at Emmanuel College in 2006 and graduated from university with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and Art History. My career began within the retail sector, and, within 6 months, I moved to a management position. Managing retail stores across the North East of England, my responsibility was to build and maintain operational performance in order to generate incremental GP for the business. This involved creating an engaging sales environment and a seamless sales experience for a customer. Other key responsibilities included:
- growing my sales teams;
- managing 10 managers as well as 50 sales consultants;
- reviewing KPIs daily;
- managing my own profit and loss; and
- upskilling individuals within the sales team.
Wishing to challenge myself further, I decided to use my transferable skills in the world of recruitment, and successfully applied to the role of team manager of a contracts division. My focus was to liaise with prospective clients and existing business to build a brand and portfolio service. Key skills included monitoring market fluctuations and competitor threats. Commercial acumen was vital to anticipate change and build new territories. Having worked in this role for a few years, I decided to develop my career further by moving into Learning and Development within recruitment – coaching managers on how to get the best performance from their teams. This involved training anyone, from those with no recruitment experience at all, to supporting directors with sales strategies and people management.
Early last year, I got the opportunity to be placed in Tanzania to support VSO alongside Randstad and work in their recruitment office in Dar es Salaam. Returning from Tanzania, I supported and created the new sales onboarding training academy at Randstad as well as the new apprenticeship RISE sales programmes.
Most recently, I received an opportunity to relocate to New York where I am Head of Management training – I am based in NYC but travel weekly to my 9 offices in the US where I coach and train senior managers and progressing team leads. I create leadership programmes to ensure that the L&D goals are aligned operationally. My role is integral to the growth plan in the US (of which we are growing rapidly) and it is my job to oversee and ensure that best in class practice is consistently implemented in order to add to the success of our organisation.
