Ethics, Meaningfulness and Mutuality

Economists are used to referring to labour as human capital; however, the GCSE and A Level specifications do not challenge students to think about how people find meaning in their job role. Dr Ruth Yeoman, Fellow, The University of Oxford, provided that stretch by asking students to consider organisational integrity and empathy; how can organisations ensure that people are thought of as more than just a cog in a wheel? Subsequent discussion among the delegates went on to consider whether profit seeking enterprises in capitalist societies can be encouraged to produce goods and services which are life sustaining rather than simply profit making.
