Ethical dilemmas and social media use in the workplace

GCSE and A Level economists travelled to the Newcastle Business School to participate in an ethics debate which was hosted by Linn Byberg from the Institute of Business Ethics.  During her presentation, Linn shared some examples of how employees have breached workplace rules regarding social media posts and then asked delegates to consider the appropriateness of a few hypothetical examples.  Worst case breaches can result in dismissal, so, before your next workplace post, consider the following checkpoints:

  1. How will the post be perceived by others;
  2. What is the potential impact on you and your organisation;
  3. Discuss with your manager or a colleague;
  4. Consider if it might be better to share the information in person; and
  5. Consider whether it will come back to bite you!
